Hi guys,

Popped into the shops this morning for a few bits & saw an old friend from school, haven;t seen her in years.

Anyway we talked about things & family, kids blah, blah & she asked me about mine, & I told her I had 5, 4 sons & a girl & she asked me what they did & were they married.

So I did & when I told her my 19 year old son was a hairdresser, she said "Oh he;s not Gay is he?" & I said "well yes he is"

OMG she said, what a shock, how do you handle that? my husband would die if his son (only son) was gay.

I was so pissed, & inside my head I thought "WTF am I going to say" then I remembered something that galesweetie  once told me, something she had said to someone once in her family.

"Well it could be worse, he could have cancer & be dying, & yes his Dad has a few issues, which we are working through, but his brothers love him & except him & so do I, & he;s the most talented hairdresser I've ever seen for someone his age, & he loves me to death & Im very proud of him"

Oh of course she said, but its just strange, to think all of us at school, all those years ago & your son is gay!!

So I walked off, a little mad, but more sad really, I'd better get used to it, there are some fucking stupid people in this world ,later Jx

Don't feel disappointed for other peoples prejudices and stupitidy. Feel outraged. There is no excuse for that kind of ignorance. When we tolerate that kind of behavior, excusing it away as 'they don't know better', we give license to them saying and sometimes doing awful things in the name of 'ignorance.'

Fuck her, and next time you see her, if you do, tell her to go fuck herself. Period. Sorry to be so angry, but I've always been very politically involved in my town and have had to deal with many people's prejudices on race, gender and sexual orientation and I find the best way to deal with them is directly by calling them on their bigotry and hateful ways in no uncertain terms.

Sorry you had to be exposed to that, but hey, look at it this way, I'm sure she's living exactly the type of life she deserves.

What you said was beautifully eloquent and demonstrated your unquestioning love and acceptance for your children.

Such small-mindedness deserves no place in your life, she doesn't deserve your friendship, or your time, so just keep being the wonderful mother you no doubt are and keep in touch with the friends who value you and your family. What a pity you had to waste those minutes on her!

I think I would have asked her straight out 'What do you mean HANDLE it? He's gay not a criminal.' Then I would have used my most patronizing tone of voice for the rest of the conversation hoping she would realize she was being a complete idiot. Maybe give her a 'I feel sowy for oooo' pat on the shoulder before walking away. But that's just me and my evil streak shining through. :o)

I get nasty comments all the time because my son is autistic and my response is usually along similar lines depending on the mood I'm in ;oP Wherever possible though, I try and talk to anyone who feels it's okay for them to pass judgment on us. I let them know exactly what is 'wrong' with him and that he can't help the way he is and that I don't appreciate it when complete strangers stand there calling us names. If nothing else maybe next time they see a family like ours they will think twice about opening their ignorant mouths.

What matters is that your son is healthy and happy, which he is coz he obviously has a great mother and a great family who support him. About your friend - don't worry, she ain't worth it.
